Montenero “Junior Professional” Programme – London **closed**

Montenero Consulting (MCL) is a small development consultancy, supporting the delivery of high-quality development outcomes, both directly and by building the delivery capacity of other small firms. MCL works with partner governments, donors, NGOs and other firms to provide technical advice and operational support for developing and fragile countries. We have a sectoral focus on governance, security & justice, trade and economic development

The MCL Junior Professional (JP) Development Programme is a six-month internship designed to provide the JP with an initial grounding in how the development industry works (particularly the HMG-funded consultancy sector) and the MCL  approach to supporting small development consultancies.  The JP will also get exposure to the technical areas covered by MCL’s clients. Previous JPs have subsequently found jobs with development consultancies and INGOs.

The role would suit someone looking to work in the international development consultancy market.  It offers valuable entry-level experience as a platform to apply for positions with larger consultancies or INGOs.  It would suit people with a broad interest in public policy and institutional development, with a particular focus on trade, justice sector and broader governance issues.

Career development outcomes will include:

  • Understanding of the development consulting market including the project cycle and related procurement processes.
  • Marketable skills in proposal work, project delivery, financial modelling and corporate administration
  • A network of contacts in the consulting sector and some donor exposure e.g. to FCDO, CSSF, UN Agencies
  • The opportunity to apply for consulting positions with MCL clients.

The programme is flexible depending on business need but will include:

  • Pipeline management and bid support, including pipeline management, technical research on leads, commercial proposal support, building consortia/ partnering arrangements and proposal management
  • Project delivery – contributing to the delivery of project activities and outputs for a range of clients and partners
  • Client support, including building clients’ business development, project delivery and internal systems capacity
  • Corporate administration to building understanding of how development consultancies operate
  • Semi-structured learning, including attendance at external workshops and seminars and guided research on the development industry, current thinking on aid delivery and key areas such as Theory of Change, Conflict Sensitivity, M&E etc.

Applications:

You should have a masters degree (or be working towards one), a demonstrable commitment to a career in development and the ability to learn quickly and multi-task.  We would especially like to hear from people with an interest in governance, trade and/or justice sector issues, especially in fragile or conflict environments.

We don’t believe in unpaid internships so we offer the London Living Wage and a stimulating working environment that allows you to learn and to network widely.  We are committed to equal opportunities and seek to promote diversity.  We therefore especially encourage applications from those who are underrepresented in development consultancy.  We are willing to make any reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process.  Please flag this if required.

Please submit a CV and a short covering letter to info@montenero.co.uk  outlining why you are interested in the position, what you would bring and what you want to do with what you learn.

Start date is flexible but preferably by the start of March 2022.  Flexible, part-time working is possible if you are still studying.
